spiritwouldcontaminateherandTohTseeAhne,too,ifitgotthechance.Shehadtoprotectherself.ShemuststaypureinsouluntilsheandTohTseeAhcouldget
outofhere.
Inthebarnyard,Nudahsawascissortail messengeroftheSpirits.
 Flyaway,brave,bird.FlyawaytotheComanchera.TellallmyrelationswhereIam.TellmyfamilytocomeandgetmeandTohTseeAh.Tellthemtocomeandkill
theseTejanos,andtakemehome.
ShediscoveredajuniperbushinthecorneroftheParkeryard.Itwasn'tcedar,butitwasaclosesubstitute.Shenippedsmalltwigsandbranchesfromit,madea
thatchofit,andlititatthefireplace,thenwaftedthesmokeoverherself.Shebrushedthesmokingthatchupanddown,closetoherlegs,acrossherheadanddown
herbackasfarasshecouldreach.Shefeltcleansed.ThenshesmokedTohTseeAhnethesameway.
Shefeltgood,renewed.Pahayukahadtaughtherthattheritualwasanaffirmationofherplaceintheworld.Itassertedtheindividual'sversionofthepartnershipevery
personhaswiththeuniverse.Ittellsthehunterthatheisneveralone,nomatterhowfarawayhewandersfromthisrelativesandfriends.Itguaranteesthe
Page43
captivethataworldofharmonyandgoodfortuneexists,nomatterhowmanyrestraintspreventonefromreachingit.
Nudahrefusedtowearanythingbutherdeerskinsheath,rejectingalltheclothesthewhitewomantriedtoforceuponher.Sheputasidethepolkadotandprint
pinaforesandsmockstheyhadgivenTohTseeAhanddressedherinherantelopeshift.Itwasapitifullysmallgesture,butitwasallshehadtomaintaintheiridentity
andafragmentoftheirdignity.
 That'sallright, saidAnna. Shemustfeelalotmorenaturalinherownclothes.Itwon'thurtanythingforhertowearthem.
 Well,it'sallright, saidBess. Fornow.
 Yes, saidIsaac. We'vegottobepatient.
 Ijustcan'tseewhyshewantstogoback, saidAnna.
 Well,onceshelearnstheconveniencesofcivilization,she'llforgetallaboutgoingback, saidIsaac.
BessandAnnarepeatedlycameintoNudah'sroomortookherandTohTseeAhintothemainroomofthedoublecabin,withtheirsewingbasketsandbowlsof
vegetablestopeel. It'sbetter,wedon'thavetoheatbothrooms, Bessexplained.
Nudahthoughtofhidingfromthem.Buttheywouldsoonfindher~theyknewallthehidingplaces,andthentheywouldwatchherevenmoreclosely.Ifsheweregoing
tofindachancetogetaway,shewouldhavetopretendtodowhattheywanted.
Anotherstormhit,thisonewithrain,sleetandwind. Thatmoistwindjustgetsintoaperson'sbones, declaredBess.AndNudahadmitteditwascozytositbya
goodfireandwork.Annawasteachinghertoembroider,whichsheenjoyed.Shethought,attimes,thatmaybeshewouldbehappyinsuchahouse.Orrather,thatif
shecouldtakethishousewithhertotheComanchera,shewouldbehappytoacceptitforherfamily.
Sheheldtheedgeoftherugandasked Cómoseheche? thenmademotionsofweaving.
WhenBessrealizedthatCynthiaAnnwasaskinghowtherug
Page44
wasmade,sheadmittedshedidn'tknow. Why,weboughtthatrugfromJulianFeildoverinFortWorth.HehadtoorderitfromDallas.Wedon'tknowhowit's
made.
SoNudahlayonthefloorandtracedthestrandsofthebraid,untilshehadfiguredoutthemethodandthepattern.BessandAnnashowedherhowtocutoldsocks
andunderwearwithapairofscissorstomakethestrands,andshebraidedasmallrug.Shelefttheendsloose,sothatshecouldaddtoitwhenshegotmorematerial.
 Lookatthis! Besssaid,showingtherugtoIsaac. She'srealindustrious.Shefiguredouthowtheymakethoserugswebuy.
 That'swonderful, saidIsaac. Iknewitwouldallworkout.She'llfitrightinandlearnEnglishinnotime.Alltheothersofourfamilythatwerecapturedwere
recoveredfromthemercilesssavagesbeforetheyforgotEnglish.Wehavetobepatient.
ButNudahstillfeltsoiledbylifeintheParkerhouse,andshegatheredmorejunipertosmokeherselfandTohTseeAh.EverytimesherealizedtheParker'sspirits
werecrawlingalloverher,shehadtocleanseherself.
 TioIsaac, shesaid. Tiomio.CundovamanosalaComanchera?Whenwillwegototheprairie?I'msolonelyhere.Myheartcriesallthetimeformyhusband
andsons.Yousaidwewouldgoandlookforthem.Whencanwestart?
 Soon, heanswered. Soon.
But soon wasslowincoming.Nudahbegantoseethat,ifsheandTohTseeAhweregoingtogetbacktotheprairie,shewouldhavetodevisethemethodandthe
tripherself. Givemeahorseandshowmetheway? sheaskedIsaac. TohTseeAhandIwillbeallright.Iknowhowtotravelandtakecareofmyselfonthetrail.
ButIsaacwouldn'thearofit. Afterwe'vesavedyoufromthatlongnightofsuffering,wecan'tjustletyougo.Don'tyourealizethoseinfidelsouttherewouldjust
tortureyou,thewaytheydoallwhitewomen?Thosehowlingdemonswouldbeatyou,forceyoutowork,letyoustarveandfreeze.Andeverycrudebuckthatcame
alongwouldfeelfreetoravageyou.Ican'tletyougobacktothatmiserableplight.
ThenI'llhavetofindawayonmyown,Nudahsaidtoherself.
Page45
ThefirstSundayafterchurch,manypeoplefollowedtheParkerclanbacktoIsaac'scabininaparadeofbuggiesandhacks.Andpeoplebeganarrivingfromother
places:womeninlonggownswhosesleeveswereaswhiteandroundasmushroomsandwhosedarkskirtswentdowntotheground~mencameinblackcoatsand
whiteshirtsandstoodaroundvisiting,smokingcigarettesandsuckingongrassstems.
IsaacParkerwasclearlythechief.Standingontheporch,hecalledforattention,andeveryonestoodsilentlywhilehemadealittlespeech. Wearegatheredhere
todaytowelcomeourCynthiaAnnbackfromperditionandintothefoldofherrightfulfamily.Iwanttothankyouall,friends,neighbors,family,forcomingheretoday
towishheranduswell.Shehassufferedlong,unprotectedandundefended,inwaysthatnoneofuscancomeclosetoimagining.Shehaslivedinthemostdespicable
ofconditionsandparticipatedinthemostcontemptibleofpractices,forcedintodiabolicalperversitiesbythosemiserable,heathenwretches.Butsheisnow praisebe
untotheLord! restoredtothosewholoveher.LetusthanktheLord, hesaid,breakingintoprayer,andallthosearoundobedientlybowedtheirheads.
 Thankthee,Father,forrestoringCynthiaAnntous.InYourwisdom,Youlookeddownandsawwhatwasright.Yousawthelambthatwaslost,andYourestoredit [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
